Someone You Should Know: Medal of Honor receipient Navy SEAL LT. Michael Murphy

When Marcus Luttrell’s book Lone Survivor came out, Blackfive commented,

Finally, the story of one of the most harrowing battles in our nation’s history is being told.

A key participant in that battle, Navy SEAL LT. Michael Murphy, has posthumously received the nation’s highest award, the Medal of Honor. Incredibly, his hometown newspaper isn’t interested in his story. They, the New York Times, have yet to cover it.

Bruce McQuain from QandO has put together a moving tribute to this American hero.

    Kevin,
We all missed you at Jacqui and Burt’s wedding. It was a great time that passed much too quickly.
Two things: 1. I was at the Pentagon for LT Michael Murphy’s induction ceremony into the “Hall of Heroes.” It was beautiful and very moving. I have a keepsake memorial program that will remain in my personal Navy archives. Notice I wrote “LT” verses “Lt.” That is because the Navy way is “LT” not Lt. Somehow an Air Force method of abbreviating “Lt.” was introduced into the coverage of his being awarded the Medal of Honor. In the A ring, 4th floor there is also a showcase that honors him. The same error is at the top of the placard above the display. I advised Washington Headquarters’ Services Graphics folks who immediately went to G.Q. and advised they will fix it ASAP. I think LT Murphy would want it right!
    2. I may have a candidate for “Someone you should know.” Mr. Norman McDaniel is a friend and colleague I served with at the Defense Acquisition University. As a crewmember of an Air Force B-52, he was shot down over Viet Nam. As one of the longest captives of the war, he spent nearly 7 years in POW camps including the “Hanoi Hilton.” He has a great story that attributes his survival to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
If you like, I can ask him if he would consider doing an interview with you, or I will write up a synopsis of his experience.
    Hope you are well!

    Paul
