When Matt from Blackfive joins us for Someone You Should Know every weekend, he often get his information from small town newspapers and military sources like Stars & Stripes and Army Times. We often criticize the MSM for not telling these stories, so finally, we have an opportunity to say “job well done” to the Washington Post. Tonight Matt told us about three special men, Lt. Michael P. Murphy, Navy SEAL Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew G. Axelson and Petty Officer 2nd Class Danny P. Dietz. The Washington Post told their story earlier this week,
2 SEALs Receive Navy Cross
Pair Died Fighting Taliban in Afghanistan
The perilous firefight erupted at 10,000 feet in some of the world’s most rugged terrain along Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan, when the SEAL team probed deep into enemy territory on a clandestine mission to kill or capture a Taliban militia leader. By nightfall that day, three of the SEALs lay dead, along with eight other SEALs and eight Army Special Operations aviators whose MH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed during a daring rescue attempt.
It was the worst death toll in a single day since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001, and the biggest single loss of life for the Naval Special Warfare forces since the invasion of Normandy in World War II, the Navy reported.

There is much debate over the Bush proposal for military tribunals and interrogation techniques.
At the center of this debate is how to interpret Common Article III of the Geneva Convention:
In the case of armed conflict not of an international character occurring in the territory of one of the High Contracting Parties, each Party to the conflict shall be bound to apply, as a minimum, the following provisions:
(1) Persons taking no active part in the hostilities, including members of armed forces who have laid down their arms and those placed hors de combat by sickness, wounds, detention, or any other cause, shall in all circumstances be treated humanely, without any adverse distinction founded on race, colour, religion or faith, sex, birth or wealth, or any other similar criteria.
To this end, the following acts are and shall remain prohibited at any time and in any place whatsoever with respect to the above-mentioned persons:
(a) violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture;
(b) taking of hostages;
(c) outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment;
Here is a round-up on online links and blog commentary.
The official position of the Bush administration is here. A strong blogger defense of the president’s position from Powerline is here.
Liberal blogger Marty Ledermen says the central question is this,
Should the CIA be legally authorized to breach the Geneva Conventions by engaging in the following forms of “cruel treatment” prohibited by “common” Article 3(1)(a) of those Conventions?:
— “Cold Cell,” or hypothermia, where a prisoner is left to stand naked in a cell kept near 50 degrees, during which he is doused with cold water.
— “Long Time Standing,” in which a prisoner is forced to stand, handcuffed and with his feet shackled to an eye bolt in the floor for more than 40 hours.
— Other forms of “stress positions” and prolonged sleep deprivation, perhaps akin to “Long Time Standing.”
— Threats of violence and death of a detainee and/or his family.

Hooked: The drugs which fuel the Taliban.
By Michael Yon
A reverse symbiosis is at work: Those who benefit most from the opium/heroin trades also benefit most from a destabilized Afghanistan, because a stable country with functioning government systems, reliable security forces, and a framework of laws is a bad climate for the drug trade. Conversely, farmers growing crops such as cotton and beans benefit from a stable government climate, which affords the opportunity to think beyond the next crop cycle. In order to make agriculture a more successful business venture, farmers need a stable government as a partner. But since the interests of poppy farmers and narco-kings are in aggressive opposition to any plan to stabilize Afghanistan, this partnership is not even in the talking stages.
Listeners of Pundit Review Radio were already aware of this, because Michael told us something quite similar back on August 13. To listen to that interview click here.

James Joyner waded into the cesspool and reports the following,
Duncan Black, aka Atrios,
But, anyway, just a big hearty fuck you to the White House and the news media who have decided this day is largely a personal narrative about George Bush, a man who was almost entirely absent on that day then had a big giggle before falling asleep early.
Kos,
Itâ??s not about me, and itâ??s certainly not about Bush, who after his famous Pet Goat moment cowardly fled and hid out in Nebraska in fear â?? the same kind of abject fear theyâ??d spend the next five years selling to the American people.
Ezra Klein: â??Five years ago, we were attacked. But the real damage happened when we responded.â?Â
Michael Tomasky calls â??OBSCENEâ? media coverage of Bush commemorations that donâ??t discuss the â??partisan rancorâ? that â??Bush & Co. have enforced on the country since about 9-14.â?Â
Wayne Barrett and Dan Collins have a piece in The American Prospect, debuting today, arguing that Rudy Giuliani was not a hero who united a great city and the country in a time of crisis but rather a blundering nincompoop whose poor administrative skills made much of the tragedy possible.Robert Sheer: â??In light of that sorry record of the propagandistic exploitation of the 9/11 tragedy for partisan political purpose, is it any wonder that large numbers of Americans have doubts about all of it and that a considerable industry of documentaries and investigative reports has sprung up with alternative theories ranging from the plausible to the absurd?â?Â
Remember, these are not fringe lunatics, culled to show the left in a bad light, they are the thought leaders of the left, the best and brightest they have to offer in the blogosphere. If you can stomach it, James has more, much more.
Last night’s edition of Someone You Should Know was unbelievably powerful. Matt from Blackfive shared the incredible story of Rick Rescorla and he told us about how Rick saved more than 2,700 people in the south tower on the morning of September 11.
Rick Rescorla is featured in today’s Investor’s Business Daily in an article titled His Actions Saved Thousands
Mudville Gazette has an extensive tribute to Rick that includes a petition you can sign urging the president to award him the Medal of Freedom.
Rick Rescorla is definitely Someone You Should Know.

It was our honor to welcome back Powerlineâ??s Scott Johnson for his third appearance on Pundit Review Radio last evening.
Scott was one of our first guests when we launched the show, he was one of the first members of the new media that we invited on when we landed the show at WRKO and it was great fun to have him back once again.
We discussed the political landscape since September 11, how we went from unified to bitterly divided.
