A personal story and a question for Democrats
A personal story and a question for Democrats
First my story,
I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. King over MLK weekend in 1999. I was working for an organization that sponsored events featuring high profile speakers engaging in roundtable discussions. We held our event on Saturday, and the MLK service at Ebenezer Church was the next morning. I spent a some quality time that weekend with the guest speakers including Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Ambassador Andrew Young and especially Nobel winner John Hume. What a great man. Anyway, Mrs. King was also a roundtable participant. I said hello and exchanged a few quick pleasantries. What I remember most was her quiet dignity. The way she sat, listened to people talk. The way she was pleasant throughout the entire day as an endless stream approached her to say hello. Just a classy woman, that is what I remember about her.
I think most Americans feel that way about Mrs. King whether they met her or not.
Now my questionâ?¦
How do you think these absurd partisan funerals sit with the vast majority of Americans?

Republicans deserve it. Since last week’s attempt by Karl Rove to pass a Constitutional Amendment allowing Slavery, the Republicans have proven themeselves, again, to be on the WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY!

Martin Luther King on what he’d like said at his own funeral:
….Every now and then I think about my own death, and I think about my own funeral. And I don’t think of it in a morbid sense. Every now and then I ask myself, “What is it that I would want said?” And I leave the word to you this morning….
I’d like somebody to mention that day, that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to give his life serving others. I’d like for somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try, in my life, to clothe those who were naked. I want you to say, on that day, that I did try, in my life, to visit those who were in prison. I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity.
Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness

Z-man’s comments indicate that “Republicans deserve it”??? WHAT in heaven’s name does Mrs. King’s funeral have to do with Republicans?
Your world view is so twisted that you cannot separate the celebration of this woman’s life from politics? So you Wellstone the funeral. To punish the Republicans? Oh please….
Infantile, self absorbed, immature behavior that proves once again that the liberals have neither the discipline nor the maturity to be trusted with power. And this is a terrible tragedy, as this country needs two strong parties to keep it’s balance in times of war.
I hope that they complete the distruction so that something healthier can emerge before the 08 elections, ’cause this is going to be a long, hard, bloody war.

I wonder what John McCain’s black baby would think of this.

Yes, Republikans deserve it because they systematically destroy hope and that is what King stood for, HOPE. Instead you try to bring back Jim Crow and Slavery. You will lose the next election because we will be ready to prove you are cheating before the first vote is cast. WE ARE READY TO WIN AT ANY COST AND YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR HATEFUL POLICIES. You will be lucky if we ALLOW a Republikan Party to exist after 2008

Z-Man,
Welcome to the Kos-monuts. Did you run your pretzel logic past Bobby Bryd first? Have you picked up a history book to see that more Republicans voted for Civil Rights laws than segregationist Democrats?
Which party wants to enslave poor inner city kids in failing schools?
Trey, your comments were right on the money.
Z-Man, please keep posting. I want to hear more from you.

“WE ARE READY TO WIN AT ANY COST AND YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR HATEFUL POLICIES. You will be lucky if we ALLOW a Republikan Party to exist after 2008.”
Z-Man, you crack me up. Who are you going to win with? Why can’t you capitalize on the Republican tendency to shoot themselves in the foot or their inability to deliver a clear, concise message? You got nothin’ and you are going to have your ass handed to you again in ‘08. Your party leaders have failed you and will continue to do so. BTW, it may be helpful if you bring some ideas or solutions to the issues facing this great Nation. Your hatefulness in not very becoming.

I didn’t see the funeral, but it sounds like a wrong place wrong time thing to me.
Small nit– “funerals?” I think we’re talking about 1 funeral here (don’t try the Wellstone thing, there’s no there there),
and the map thing is an unecessary misdirect, which doesn’t explain the near 50-50 vote. Try this site for red/blue map breakdowns:

Doug,
You started off so strong…alas…Don’t try the Wellstone funeral? Your joking I hope. Watch this and come back and tell me I’m wrong,
http://exposetheleft.com/2006/02/07/wellstonefuneral/
As for the map, that shows that the people who voted Democrat are located in large urban centers. That was a breakdown of votes by county. The vast majority of people, who don’t happen to live in big cities, will find yesterday extremely offensive. Your party has zero chance of winning Red States with performances like yesterday.

Whose party? I’m a registered independent
I’m sick of the boo-hooing over people complaining that the funeral for a partisan politician had partisan overtones (the shock!) I agree however that that does not apply to Mrs. King.
As for the map, urban centers= more people, hence the blurring of the map when adjusted for poulation (one person/one vote, last time I counted– of course I don’t live in Florida or Ohio {***JOKE***}). Also, some of the maps accounted for the fact that very few red or blue counties are purely so, giving you a map that looks like a big bruise or a rotting eggplant.
If you mean the vast majority of people are Republican or conservative (whatever that means now), I don’t agree, Especially after such a close presidential election.
If you want to say the only people who thought the King funeral speeches were a great idea are dumb-blind left-wing cheerleaders, that would make more sense.
Let’s check back on this after James Dobson’s funeral, shall we?

Doug,
Love the disclaimers…that should prevent a riot.:) I don’t mean the vast majority of people are Republican. I mean the vast majority of people are NOT liberals, certainly not unhinged liberals as were on display yesterday. Plenty of Dems are conservative people, with traditional values, etc. They have to be embarrassed by the jackasses who have hijacked their party. What % of Dems do you think could stand behind what happened yesterday? 15%? Maybe. They are pandering to a narrow group of their constituency and turning off the rest. They are also cementing any chance of any moderates from ever joining their ranks.

I think we’re in agreement there about the % (the idea of it, I don’t put a number on it) of Democrats that thought it was a great idea to go on in that way at this funeral. There are plenty of subtler ways to connect the King legacy to freedom and human rights– simply by sticking to their actions and words (I’ll put Mrs. King and her husband on the same pedestam though it was her funeral alone)– without trying to embarrass the President. There are– and will be– plenty of more appropriate opportunities for that.
**The vast majority are not unhinged liberals? Don’t let Michelle Malkin’s publishers see that.
February 8th, 2006 at 1:17 pm
You don’t call that display unhinged?
Kevin
February 8th, 2006 at 1:19 pm
The unhinged reference was to those who disgraced themselves at the funeral yesterday. They are unhinged, not the majority of Democrats or libers. Well, on second thought…not the majority of Democrats. Let’s leave it at that.

WE will win the next election because any and all tactics are appropriate when fighting Republikans. After our victory, it will not be difficult to arrest the former “Select-isents” Bush and Cheney, try them for their crimes, and slam the door. This will also be a clear message to any potential usurpers of the People’s House: Go against US and your politics of personal destruction give you the same fate as your fascist leaders.

So… The Z stands for Zero, Zilch, Nada…? What else ya got? I assume I haven’t seen your agenda/philospphy/mantra is because it doesn’t fit on a bumper sticker. You must receive discount DNC talking points because you are at least three years behind the current DNC pap. George Bush and the RNC are so stupid, evil, against constitutional rights that we will skate to victory in ‘08. We could win with you running our ‘08 campaigns. Do you ever for a minute think you may be on the wrong side of history and just about every issue that concerns everyday Americans? Z is for stuck on stupid, or is it zzzstupid?
February 9th, 2006 at 2:49 am
We won 2008 because we were ready to stop the Republikan vote fraud before it started. The mere presence of Republikans (and â??Reagan Democratsâ?ť) in a community is equivalent to voter intimidation, plain and simple. Your fascism is history and we will NEVER allow it to return.

There is another very poignant story I saw recently. Over on http://www.familiesunitedmission.com/docs/blog/there is a heartbreaking story of a Mother who lost a son in Iraq and just met with President Bush. I believe you will find it inspirational.
