The GOP Congress Jumps The Shark
George Will continues to pummel the GOP Congress, and who can blame him?
Many Strange ‘Emergencies’
A poll shows that approval of the job Congress is doing has plunged to just 22 percent. One wonders: who are those 22 percent?
Even without the debacle of the Senate’s “emergency” legislation, April was the cruelest month for conservatives, disgusted as they were by Republicans’ floundering, pandering responses to the public’s infantile tantrums about gasoline prices. Republican responses included threats of windfall-profits taxes and other measures to punish “price gouging.” Conservatives, who are supposed to understand the power of markets and the limited power of government, should be saying
About those polls critical of the president’s “handling” of gas prices, who over the age of 7 really thinks presidents can “handle” world petroleum prices? And: A major reason for high oil prices is the rapid modernization of India and Chinaâ??which is desirable and promoted by U.S. policy. And: For some reason, it pleased the Intelligent Designer of the universe to put much of the Earth’s oil in turbulent placesâ??the Middle East, Venezuela, Nigeria, Russia. And: The Congress that is in histrionic anguish over high gas prices has mandated adding ethanol to gasolineâ??ethanol which is in short supply, partly because Congress has legislated a tariff of 54 cents per gallon on imported ethanol.
Anyone checking the mail for that $100 rebate check from “Big Oil”proposed by…no, not the socialist leaning liberal Democrats, but THE GOP LEADERSHIP!! Have you ever heard of anything so sophomoric, so plainly grandstanding, so against core principles of not just the party but basic economics?
And now, for the cherry on top of the hypocrisy pie, YOU MUST CHECK OUT THIS PICTURE AND CAPTION. (HT: Andrew Sullivan)

Hasert has to go. End of story. I was embarresed just viewing the pictures. Get ready for Speaker Pelosi the Socialist from San Fran and her side kicks Harry “Dingy” Reid the future Senate Majority Leader and, of course, Evita Clinton back in the White House and then the American people who care more about baseball games, poker, prime time reality TV, and porn will get what they deserve, windfall taxes, profits taxes on all those greedy private businesses that actually make money and are successful, wage and price controls, national single payer (meaning Hillary herself) healthcare, pre-pre-govt subsidized daycare, welfare and social services for all illegals, free clean syringes for all the dirt bag drug addicts, free (tax payer subsidized) sex changes (add-a dik-to-mees)like they have in San Fran, reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine which will mean bye bye to Rush and O’Reily and many of the rightward leaning blogs, more Ruth Bader Ginsbergs who say its ok to look to foreign countries when deciding how to interpret our Constitution, 60%plus taxation when 70 million boomers retire starting in 08′ and will require cradle to grave free viagra and Social Security benefits, and, abortion on demand, renouncing our sovereignty to the UN, more amnesty for more illegals, etc…. That is what it is looking like right now. The only thing that gives me hope is that certainly somebody in the GOP must realize the simple solution: immediately close the border with national guard, fences, and technology, deport all crim-alliens, deport any illegal with a crimminal record, fine any business hiring anybody who is not a US citizen a minimum of 50k, call for immediate repeal of all gas taxes and for the immediate development of oil and gas in ANWR and the outer continental shelf. I know I am starting to sound like a broken record, but this ain’t rocket science guys. While you are at it you may want to aggressively advocate making the tax cuts on income and capital gains/dividends permannet. Last time I checked that’s what conservative Republicans do. All I can think of is that clip we play during our show when Kennedy says “hellooo, hellooo….” Earth to the beltway GOP “Cowboy Up….”

Neither party cares about the average American, and contentious partisan politics, by design, has weakened this country immensely. I urge everybody to drop the labels and affiliations and become “Americans” again.
May 2nd, 2006 at 7:11 am
Actually. I disagree John. Although there are some RINOs who have less fealty to traditional conservative principles (limited govt, individual liberty, respect for life, self defense, propoerty, rule of law, etc…) I believe that the Democrat party “cares” far less about the very constituencies they purport to represent (poor, minorites, disadvantaged, elderly, avg working Americans) All the policies they support and advocate illustrate how little they “care” about these constitutents. And it is obvious that by their words and public actions have done far more to emasculate and enervate our country with regard to our national security. So I won’t “drop the labels.” labels my friend matter a great deal. Especially the “Democrat” label. They represent the domestic insurgency in this country and I will not allow you to lump conservatives and liberals togehter. They couldn’t be more differnent.

I don’t see one bit of difference between the liberals/conservatives in Congress, and I really do believe that partisan politics has created a great divide in this country. Partisans, of which there seem to be so many these days, appear more hateful than ever. It’s sad. It’s fine to have an emotional debate with others, but why all the namecalling, yelling, insults, etc.? For someone who doesn’t align with a particular party (and never will), trust me, it’s very disheartening to witness. Personally, I would support a Ron Paul/Cynthia McKinney ticket. Both have been vocal in their total disagreement with the illegal, lie-based, costly and immoral wars started by this government, and McKinney has even accurately hinted at the government’s involvement in 9/11 (thus her skewering at the hands of the government propaganda organs, especially FOX News, for an event that received a disproportionate amount of airtime). More importantly, their voting records back up their rhetoric. These are two real American patriots.

The whole government has to go. A review of their “outstanding” achievements will back me up.
* 9/11: Able Danger-Wall of Separation diminished the effectivenss of our ability to prevent terror attacks.
* WMD: CIA-Ineffective/faulty intelligence.
* Illegal aliens: INS (and several administrations) brought on an invasion of illegal aliens.
* Katrina: FEMA is accused of breaking down
Both houses of Congress, the Executive and the Judiciary are all broken. The recent illegal alien proposals in congress are proof. Traditional American fairness would dictate that those who follow the rules have first shot over those who don’t/didn’t. Congress will pass amnesty, or they won’t do anything. This is because Bush wants amnesty, and will probably veto anything short of amnesty. But what about the legal immigrants? Will they be sacrificed?

John, Cynthia McKinney is an Amrerican “patriot.” She isn’t a “partisan?” You can’t be serious. I’m sorry but I can’t follow your pretzel logic. Thanks for your comments but really can’t have a civil discorse with you since you fail to make a coherent argument, especially by staying on topic and debunking the very specific claims I make. By not rebutting them, I will assume that you cannot and therefore agree with my central premise and conlusion above.

Ripama, I disagree with your assertion that”The whole government has to go. A review of their â??outstandingâ?ť achievements will back me up.” While a significant number of incumbants should go, I would argue that there are far more socialist-liberals who need to go than conservative Republicans. (Although there are a number of RINOs that do need to go)
* 9/11: Able Danger-Wall of Separation diminished the effectivenss of our ability to prevent terror attacks. (Direct result of the Reno/Goerellick “walll of separation” created by the Clinton justice dept.)
* WMD: CIA-Ineffective/faulty intelligence. (Again, information that came directly from the Clinton appointee CIA director Tenet who claimed the WMD info was a “slam dunk.”)
* Illegal aliens: INS (and several administrations) brought on an invasion of illegal aliens. (while I agreee with your assessment that Bush and many Republicans have been weak on this issue it was a conservative Republican bill (Sensenbrenner/Ryan) bill that would have at least crimminalized illegals.) No such liberal Democratic legislation has been proposed. The only vocal opponents of de fact amnesty ahve all been conservative Republicans.
* Katrina: FEMA is accused of breaking down (The breakdown/failure was predominantly at the local level. That has been empirically demonstarted. BTW, Democratic Mayor Nagin and Democrat Gov. Blanco were primarily responsible for the failure to respond which cost thousands of lives.
What is the major similarity in all the examples you cited? All of them were failures of liberal Democrats. Period.
May 2nd, 2006 at 1:48 pm
Gregg, with all due respect, I’m not in the business of defending either party, so I’m not looking to debunk any of your claims. I support Cynthia McKinney, a Democrat, and Ron Paul, a Republican, because they consistently break from their respective parties and vote against draconian measures like the Patriot Act, making them, in my own humble opinion, non-partisan patriots. They believe in the sanctity of civil liberties and aren’t cowed by the fabricated, Orwellian threat of terrorism that has been used to frighten the population and most of Congress into submission.
May 2nd, 2006 at 2:49 pm
Cynthia Mckinny is a “non-partisan patriot” I could not think of a bigger domestic insurgent in the Congress. You are surely joking. She is one of the most, if not THE most leftward leaning partisan member in the U.S. Congress based on her voting record. Ron Paul, a libertarian-Republican is far less “partisan” but isn’t it the job of our elected representatives to be partisan in how they legislate?
The Patriot Act is “draconian?” You seem to be in the diminutive minority who believes that since congress voted almost unanimously to extend its statutes and provisions. How exactly is the Patriot Act “draconian?” Do you have any specific examples of civil liberties being violated by the Patriot Act you can cite? I’d be curious to konw since Dianne Feinstein, in her Congressional testimony, concurred that there has not been one single violation.
The War on Terror is “orwellian?” and is being used to “freighten” the population and congress? Really, so we’ve all been duped? So we have nothing to worry about? It’s all been a hoax. Why havn’t the American people and the 99% of our elected representatives who voted to extend the Ptriot Act figured this out like you have john?

“Really, so we’ve all been duped?” Yes, sadly. You will learn this in due course.

John, You still have failed to answer the questions I have posed:
I know you can’t defend the MCkinney comments you made, but what about these still unanswered questions?
Do you have any specific examples of civil liberties being violated by the Patriot Act you can cite? Iâ??d be curious to konw since Dianne Feinstein, in her Congressional testimony, concurred that there has not been one single violation.
The War on Terror is â??orwellian?â?ť and is being used to â??freightenâ?ť the population and congress? Really, so weâ??ve all been duped? So we have nothing to worry about? Itâ??s all been a hoax. With all due respect John, if you are going to make some fairly bold assertions regarding the patriot act vilating civil liberties and the War on terror being an “orwellian” scare tactic as you charaterize it, I am sure you can substantiate those claims with empirical documented credible proof and evidence.
I look forward to seeing evidence you introduce to back up your bold claims.

I stand by my McKinney comments and support her 100%. The Patriot Act is an affront to civil liberties. Why? Because of the vast consolidation of federal power, the increased ability of the FBI to request financial and personal information, the increased secrecy regarding the arresting and detaining of individuals, the mere fact that you can be deemed a “terrorist” and have your rights thrown out the window (see Guantanamo), etc. The first version of this Act was hurried through Congress and many Congressional members admitted to not even reading it before voting in favor of it. This is unbelievable, and the very passing of this Act is a crime. People have been arrested under this Act, but the mere passing of this Act under the full support of both parties is the real problem and should be worrisome to all Americans, especially those that claim to be conservatives who once upon a time favored small, unintrusive government. As for the fabricated “War on Terror”, it is very Orwellian, all the way down to Osama Bin Laden as our modern day Emmanuel Goldstein. The color-coded threat alerts (which have been abandoned because nobody believes them anymore), the assurances (or threats) by Bush that Muslims want to kill us, and the talking up of a bird flu pandemic are intentional provocations meant to instill fear in the population. Once we realize that 9/11 was a neo-con/Mossad/CIA plot (and we will!), all of the consequent actions (Patriot Act, wars, etc.) that have claimed 9/11 as justification will be revealed as pure criminal abuses. I now ask you, Gregg, to explain to me why nobody in the media ever discusses the infamous Lavon affair. In 1954, Mossad agents were caught planting bombs in US and UK facilities in Egypt while attempting to leave evidence that would implicate the Muslim Brotherhood. Israeli Defense Minister Pinhas Lavon resigned in disgrace but claimed he was taking the fall for a government-directed crime gone wrong. Here we have an instance of a Mossad “false flag” terrorist attack against U.S. interests. Are we supposed to believe that this historical fact is unworthy of discussion in light of 9/11? Gregg, I don’t mean to be critical, but if you were truly willing to objectively look at the crimes being committed by your government here and abroad, you might gain better perspective.

John,
I will give you one more opportunity to specifically answer my unambiguously direct questions posed in my prior comment. If you fail to do so I will assume that you cannot proffer any specifics to support your previous claims.
One more time John:
Do you have any specific examples of civil liberties being violated by the Patriot Act you can cite? Iâ??d be curious to konw since Dianne Feinstein, in her Congressional testimony, concurred that there has not been one single violation.
YOu mentioned “Gitmo” as an example of a Patriot Act violation. Please cite the specific statute violation John for the record.
As far as the War on Terror being some sort of contrived “conspiracy” of the “neo-cons” (we all know that is code for the “Jews” John), your assertion does not even deserve a response it is so innane and insulting to my intellignece and I believe anti-Semitic. You offer no substantiated proof only vague implications that there is some huge “conspiracy” out there and although you can’t quite proove it, trust me, you say, you will find out soon enough. Yea, ok John, you let us know when you get your hands on that evidence. I’m sure that when we find out who the “real killers” of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were, we’ll find out that it was Bush, Rove, and them “jews” in Israel who fabricated and orchestrated 9-11. (Cue twilight zone music)
