Anti-war protesters heading for Navy SEAL Marc Allen Lee’s funeral
Matt at Blackfive has the disturbing news that Fred Phelps group plans to protest at the funeral of the first Navy SEAL to die in Iraq, Marc Allen Lee. You may remember Marc Allen Lee from a recent edition of Someone You Should Know on Pundit Review Radio.
Listen to Marc’s story and then let it sink in that fellow Americans, fellow human beings, would protest at this man’s funeral. The following message was left on the post of Marc’s Someone You Should Know. Here it is in full,
I was one of Marcâ??s instructors and believe that in the short amount of time I had to know him, I got to know him well, not best friends by anymeans but as close as the instructor/student guidlines we have to follow allow. Marc was an exceptional student, but the thing that stood out most to me was his ability to observe when things were b.s. and when things were done for honest reasons. That being said, I believe that Marc believed in the cause and ultimately in the SEAL Teams, he gave me hope for the future of the Teams and didnâ??t let me down. I wish that every student I put through training had his dedication and his ability to understand what it meant to be a part of the team. He is a hero and is already missed greatly.

Matt has more details about the kind of man Marc Allen Lee was at Blackfive, go check them out and remember him and his family in your prayers.
The word ‘outrage’ is thrown around a lot these days. I’m as guilty as anyone. However, in this case, the word is entirely appropriate. All Americans, even the Kos crowd, should be able to come together on this one.
Thank you Marc Allen Lee.

I have to imagine that a lot of the “anti-war” crowd would be horrified to be lumped in with the mindless hijacking of Christianity that is Fred Phelps’ “God Hates Fags” Westboro Baptist Church.
What they are doing at military funerals is atrocious from any point of view.
(For that matter, I know some actual Baptists who aren’t too pleased with these nutjobs either).
DougH,
Good point. I certainly didn’t intend to lump these people (can you call them that?) with those who object/protest the Iraq war. This group is in a special category all by themselves.

I went through about eight weeks of BUD/s training with Marc. In that short amount of time, he made an impact on me that will last a lifetime. His integrity, willingness to help his junior classmates, and just over-all character was enough to make himself stand out in my mind. When I heard that he was killed, even though I had not seen him in over two years, I was deeply saddened. The way that he died did not in any way suprise me, he would have died saving the people that were protesting at his funeral, if they were stuck in that situation. That, was what kind of a guy he was, he would have forgiven these “protestors” and would be more than willing to sacrifice his own life to protect their right to do so. I am not as good of a man as Marc. I am a proud Southern Baptist and I PROUDLY proclaim that I detest these individuals and believe that it should be them, and not Marc, that are being laid to rest. There is a time and a place for voicing one’s opinion, and at the funeral of a husband, friend, national hero, or anyone else’s funeral, is not it.
Sincerely,
Adam

I’m what most of you would likely call a “liberal” and I think conducting any such protest or demonstration at a funeral is 100% wrong. It’s wrong when Phelps does it with his nutbar horde and it’s wrong when the anti-war folks do it too. I guess that’s the idea of principles, and yes, some of us “liberal” types have ‘em.
Oh geez. You MEANT Phelps. Oh well. You get the point anyway.
It’s a stupid move no matter what, and as a “liberal” I respected it when the Freepers stood up to the Phelps crowd, as much as might not agree with other things they say.
