Sam Harris and Peter Kreeft talk religion on Pundit Review Radio

Pundit Review does NPR.

Last night we enjoyed an hour of highbrow discussion about religion. We welcomed Sam Harris, author of Letter to a Christian Nation with Boston College Philosophy Professor Dr. Peter Kreeft

Letter to a Christian Nation

Harris offers a measured refutation of the beliefs that form the core of fundamentalist Christianity. In the course of his argument, he addresses current topics ranging from intelligent design and stem-cell research to the connections between religion and violence.

    Hi:

Initially I was thrilled to come across a Sam Harria/Kreeft debate/discussion UNITL I listened to it (well actually, I couldn’t finish it it was so biased). This was the worst case of “moderating” I’ve ever encountered. It would have better been named, “Sam Harris the gasbag with nothing substantial to day: Kreeft gets a word in only before break and then we go right back to Harris.” COME ON, who do you think you fooled with this one? What a shame to silence Kreeft, who has so much wisdom to teach us. Sam Harris is a gasbag for all those who want a spokesperson for their desenting self centered lives. What a shame you manipulated such an awesome opportunity at what could have been a fascintating interview. Instead of Kreef’s brilliance, we got self absorbed gasbag Sam. I hope readers are smart enough to go to Kreefts website and listend to his lectures.

  3. Andrew says:

Sam Harris is difficult atheist to counter. I think he may have convinced me that my beliefs really are wrong.

  4. Andrew says:

Wow, listening to Sam Harris really forced me to rethink my faith. I no longer have it anymore. Thanks for posting this radio show!

  5. Payton says:

    Andrew, you fool.

There are plenty of refutations of this Harris character. Go to http://www.peterkreeft.com if you really want to know the scale of the Christian victory in the realm of philosophy and science.

  6. Payton says:

Also, I would draw shame upon your treachery to the Faith.

If you have any remote interest in the truth, read C.S. Lewis’ signature classics, and “A Refutation of Moral Relativism”, and “The Handbook of Christian Apologetics” by Peter Kreeft. I would also refer you to such authors as William Lane Craig, Kierkegaard, Samuel Johnson, Thomas Aquinas, St. Augustine, and G. K. Chesterton.

  7. Greg says:

Wow… I’m getting really sick of skeptics reading a 19th century view of slavery into a Greco-Roman view of slavery which was 2,000 years ago! Stop calling us theists unintellectual until your leading “scholars” actually do their homework. Seriously people, stop dabbling with this trendy “pop-philosophy”. Research. Do your homework. If you really want to be intellectually honest put down the Dawkins and Harris books and start reading philosophy, theology, textual criticism, etc. and formulating your own opinions based upon reason which you claim to hold so highly.

  8. Jason says:

There you go, Payton - win Andrew back with that Christian kindness! Just so you know, the question is not are there refutations of atheism or how many there are, but rather: are any of them good? I have yet to hear a single refutation from Kreeft, Craig, Lewis or any other apologist that was worth more than an hour or so’s thought (and that’s for the best arguments - most can be taken down in seconds).

  9. kevin says:

All of Sam Harris’s points are weak. I have heard all these points countered easily. Dr. Kreeft seemed to not be able to talk much, His points were poient and took sam many minutes to counter simple statements by Dr. Kreeft.

  10. kevin says:

also for a good read “The Reasons for God” by Dr. Tim Keller refutes all these points and is civil tot he thoughts. great book

  11. Adrian Quinn says:

This debate was terrible. Sam Harris constantly spoke and there few attempts by the moderator to allow Peter kreeft to speak. I honestly don’t know how allowing this type of interaction of presenting only one point of view is ever going to help us arrive at the Truth. Or maybe that is the intention. Also the moderator himself claimed to have once been a Catholic. This is a claim made by many Protestant evangelicals to in some way present themselves as newly enlightened Christians. In my experience these people, when questioned about the Catholic faith turn out to know very little about it. We have an obligation to inform ourselves properly about all belief systems using the gift of reason to determine what is true and what is not. Neither the moderator nor Sam Harris demonstrated that they have done this in regard to Catholicism. Peter Kreeft was very humble to accept the reality of this blatently biased interaction.
