Citizen journalist extraordinaire Michael J. Totten is back and blogging about his beloved Lebanon,

By bombing all of Lebanon rather than merely the concentrated Hezbollah strongholds, Israel is putting extraordinary pressure on Lebanese society at points of extreme vulnerability. The delicate post-war democratic culture has been brutally replaced, overnight, with a culture of rage and terror and war. Lebanon isn’t Gaza, but nor is it Denmark.

Lebanese are temporarily more united than ever. No one is running off to join Hezbollah, but tensions are being smoothed over for now while everyone feels they are under attack by the same enemy. Most Lebanese who had warm feelings for Israel — and there were more of these than you can possibly imagine — no longer do.

This will not last.

My sources and friends in Beirut tell me most Lebanese are going easy on Hezbollah as much as they can while the bombs are still falling. But a terrible reckoning awaits them once this is over.

From today’s ACU

If there are any doubts as to whether Bolton is the right man for this job, consider the recent hostilities in Lebanon.

When Hezbollah terrorists started launching missiles at the people of Israel without provocation, and Israel took necessary actions to defend itself — the so-called United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator Jan Egeland, self-righteously pontificated that Israel’s defensive actions were a “violation of humanitarian law.”

And the so-called United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour actually insinuated that Israel — and by inference those who support Israel (namely George Bush and the United States) — should be tried for war crimes when she addressed the “personal criminal responsibility of those involved, particularly those in a position of command and control.”

Bolton immediately called Arbour on the carpet, saying, “[P]rosecutors are not supposed to threaten people in public based on press reports… I would just say as one lawyer to another to Mrs. Arbour that she should consider her professional ethics and responsibilities very carefully here.”

Bolton also laid it on the line and said there was NO “moral equivalence” between those killed in Lebanon and in Israel. He immediately labeled the actions of Hezbollah — exactly what they were — “malicious terrorist acts” and the deaths of civilians in Lebanon “sad and highly unfortunate consequences of [Israeli] self-defense.”

THANK GOD for John Bolton! That kind of straight-talk is EXACTLY WHY America NEEDS John Bolton in the United Nations!

That’s also why Senate liberals like Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and Chris Dodd will move heaven and earth this upcoming week to put Bolton out of a job!

Opposition to the Boton nomination yet again demonstrates why the American Left cannot be trusted with our national security and why millions of Americans believe that they are invested in our defeat in Iraq and in the larger overall War on Global Jihadism. Once again the American Political Left is showing the world where they stand and who they stand with. “By their fruits, you shall know them.”

The only tough US Ambasador to serve in the feckless and corrupt UN in my lifetime and the “hurry up and lose” Libs are going to fillibuster his nomination. That’s all you have to know about the American political left in our country. Is it me or doesn’t it seem as though we are fighting a two pronged war? One against the Islamists worldwide and the domestic insurgent liberals here at home, constatnly coddling dictators like Chavez and Castro, divulging our terror surveillence secrets to the enemy, referring to our military as “rapists” and “Nazis” etc…and comparing our commander and chief to Hitler as often as possible. And now they want to castrate US representation at the most corrupt world body- the UN -at a time when we need a tough representative like Bolton most. You know he must be effective if the libs are fillibustering his nomination.

Howard Dean Calls for End to Divisiveness

and this,

Dean Calls Iraqi PM an ‘Anti-Semite’
By BRIAN SKOLOFF
Associated Press Writer

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Democratic Party chairman Howard Dean on Wednesday called Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki an “anti-Semite” for failing to denounce Hezbollah for its attacks against Israel.

Al-Maliki has condemned Israel’s offensive, prompting several Democrats to boycott his address to a joint meeting of Congress and others to criticize him. Dean’s comments were the strongest to date.

“The Iraqi prime minister is an anti-Semite,” the Democratic leader told a gathering of business leaders in Florida. “We don’t need to spend $200 and $300 and $500 billion bringing democracy to Iraq to turn it over to people who believe that Israel doesn’t have a right to defend itself and who refuse to condemn Hezbollah.”

I’ll ask again, what have the Republicans done to deserve Howard Dean? The man helps Republicans every time he opens his mouth.

Let’s hear from the alleged anti-Semite, who spoke before a joint session of Congress earlier this week,

Let me begin by thanking the American people, through you, on behalf of the Iraqi people, for supporting our people and ousting dictatorship. Iraq will not forget those who stood with her and who continues to stand with her in times of need.

Thank you for your continued resolve in helping us fight the terrorists plaguing Iraq, which is a struggle to defend our nation’s democracy and our people who aspire to liberty, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. All of those are not Western values; they are universal values for humanity.

I know that some of you here question whether Iraq is part of the war on terror. Let me be very clear: This is a battle between true Islam, for which a person’s liberty and rights constitute essential cornerstones, and terrorism, which wraps itself in a fake Islamic cloak; in reality, waging a war on Islam and Muslims and values.

It is on this unwavering belief that we are determined to build our nation, a land whose people are free, whose air is liberty, and where the rule of law is supreme.

Finally, Dick Morris has an interesting article on the Clinton administration’s role in the Middle East and he comes to the conslusion that “True friends of Israel cannot let the Dems take power

Bush and his administration clearly see the Israeli attack as an opportunity to clean out terrorist cells that have come to be pivotal in Lebanon. With Hezbollahâ??s power extending into the cabinet in Beirut, it is clear that Israeli military action is necessary to forestall the creation of a terrorist state on its northern border.

While Clinton said he embraced the need for Israeli security, when the going got rough, he bowed to world opinion and called for a cease-fire. When the United States asks Israel to stop fighting, it is like a boxerâ??s manager throwing in the towel. The bottom line is that true friends of Israel cannot afford to let the Democrats take power in Washington.

One of our main goals on Pundit Review Radio is to bring the thought leaders from the new media, the best of the blogs, to the radio. We try to do that with those closest to the action, whether it is Michael Yon in Iraq, Bill Roggio in Afghanistan. Last evening we were fortunate to speak with Dave Bender live from Jerusalem.

Dave Bender is a photo/video journalist and reporter based in Jerusalem. His blog, Israel at Level Ground is full of interesting Podcasts and coverage of the current situation and daily life in Israel.

This was a fascinating discussion of the current situation in Lebanon and in Israel. Dave has written up a post on his blog describing the experience as,

“an invigorating 45 minute live-on-air web/broadcast.”

He also thanked our listeners for such thoughtful questions,

“A big shoutout to Boston-area listeners Frank, Tom and Joel who called in with thoughtful questions about the situation here (and here I wuz,’ x-pectin’ RANTERS!)”

Last evening, during our interview of documentary filmmaker Pat Dollard, we took a call from Susan, an Army wife and mother.

It was her first time hearing the show, and she wanted to say thank you for the perspective we brought to the issue of the troops in Iraq.

What happens next was incredibly moving, you don’t want to miss this.
