Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match.
This week Bruce told us about Vietnam era Medal of Honor recipient Harold B. Durham Jr.,
As the enemy pressed their attack, 2d Lt. Durham called for supporting fire to be placed almost directly on his position. Twice the insurgents were driven back, leaving many dead and wounded behind. 2d Lt. Durham was then taken to a secondary defensive position. Even in his extremely weakened condition, he continued to call artillery fire onto the enemy. He refused to seek cover and instead positioned himself in a small clearing which offered a better vantage point from which to adjust the fire. Suddenly, he was severely wounded a second time by enemy machine gun fire. As he lay on the ground near death, he saw two Viet Cong approaching, shooting the defenseless wounded men. With his last effort, 2d Lt. Durham shouted a warning to a nearby soldier who immediately killed the insurgents. 2d Lt. Durham died moments later, still grasping the radio handset. 2d Lt. Durham’s gallant actions in close combat with an enemy force are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

This Day in History: 2008, My birthday prediction for John McCain holds up pretty well I think. I also wouldn’t change a word of what I said about Sarah Palin. I think Palin should stick to exactly what she did yesterday at the Restoring Honor rally.
August 29, 2008
Happy Birthday John McCain, You Just Blew The Presidency
Word this morning is that John McCain is going to announce Alaska governor of two years Sarah Palin as his running mate.
Pro’s:
She’s a women, obviously. However, I think McCain is overthinking this if he thinks just simply putting a women on the ticket will bring disaffected Hillary supporters into the fold. That’s a pretty low opinion of women IMHO, that they would just switch sides because the VP pick of the Republicans is a women.
Palin is a conservative and solidly pro life.
Perhaps her strongest area, she is very good on the energy issue, and has been great badgering the Dems in Washington to come up to Alaska and drill.
She is a rising star in the GOP. By rising I mean, just getting off the ground. I wonder if she is truly ready or being pushed on the national stage too soon.
Cons:
She has two years experience as governor. She’s 44 years old. So much for the anti-Obama experience arguement.
McCain turns 72 years old today. When thinking about a VP, I believe voters look at them and think, “can I imagine this person as president”. For all his flaws, Joe Biden passes that test. Will Sarah Palin? I don’t know?
Can she hold her own against a hostile press corps? How about against Joe Biden for that matter? The only honest answer is that nobody knows. I saw her about a month ago on Larry Kudlow’s TV show and I thought she did ok, not great, just ok. If that was my impression watching her in friendly territory, how will she do when really pressed?
Yes, she’s been a reformer and gone to bat against Republican corruption in her state. However, does the GOP nationally, in all of the races beyond the presidency, really want increased attention on Alaska Republicans, who are monuments to the myriad of ways the party has gone off the rails?Â
Conclusion:
McCain is really rolling the dice here. As I wrote yesterday, I think Pawlenty meets the conservative factor, has the requisite experience and I believe people would see him as “presidential material”.
The most overlooked question in all of this is “does the VP nominee have the media relations skills to be a forceful advocate?”. Pawlenty has demonstrated that he does. I don’t think you can underestimate how important this single point is, the media relations skills. Ultimately, I believe they are even more important than the conservative positions or resume. We live in a 24/7 media soaked world. There is no such thing as a single mistake when it comes to working with the media. There are blogs and You Tube that can keep a single mistake alive from now until November.
I’m flummoxed by the choice honestly. Sure, its Mavericky alright. Yes, it shows McCain is an independent thinker. However, I wonder if he’s being too cute and losing sight of the basic ingredients that make a good running mate. I hope I am proven wrong.
Previously this summer, we’ve spoken to both Sean Bielat and Brad Marston via telephone. I’ve been following both men and their campaigns and have come away very impressed with how they are using social media to reach voters, not to mention what they have been saying about spending, taxes, immigration, etc. Last night I had both gentlemen in studio for the full hour.
Sean Bielat is running against perhaps the most powerful man in the Massachusetts congressional delegation, Barney Frank. Sean has a great background, a combination of business and military experience. He brings a new approach, in terms of openness and accountability, not to mention ideas. Barney, you’ve had your chance, and we’ve ended up where we are. Time for a fresh approach. Time to RetireBarney.com
You can catch Sean for yourself as he moves WAY WAY UP the media food chain, appearing on Hannity tonight on Fox News. Don’t miss it!
Brad Marston is running to go to Beacon Hill, against three term incumbent Marty Walz in the 8th Suffolk district. He has a fundraiser this week at The Kinsale, August 25th at 6:30 PM featuring US Senator Scott Brown.
Note a screw up on my part, my mike cuts off for about 2 minutes in the early part of the interview. I apologize. You’d think after five plus years doing the show, I’d understand that the microphone was an important part of the show.:)

We’ve met a lot of really good GOP candidates on Pundit Review Radio this summer. I certainly cannot remember a time when the state has fielded so many good candidates as republicans. This is true for both state and national races.
Last night we met Rob McCarthy Jr., a Marine officer, constitutional conservative, lawyer, businessman and father. Before he can take on left wing congressman John Tierney, Rob has to get past a tough primary against Bill Hudak on September 14.
We talked how social media can aid a first time candidate, what he’s hearing from voters and what he like to see in the areas of taxes and spending.
As I told Rob last night, my hat is off to all of the men and women who have motivated themselves to become actual public servant, citizen legislators. It is a grueling process, filled with fund raising and countless events to get exposure and meet voters.

While known as a hard charging partisan, it should be noted that on the issue of government corruption, Michelle Malkin is an equal opportunity giver. She’s gone after George W. Bush (think Harriet Myers, among others), wayward senators like John Ensign (R-NV) and even GOP governors who have gone off the reservation (or Appalachian Trail).
Last night, Michelle Malkin returned to Pundit Review Radio to talk about the new and expended paperback version of her #1 New York Times bestseller Culture of Corruption.
If I didn’t know any better, I’d wonder if the Democrats get a percentage of her book sales, after all, they are seemingly working overtime to provide her with new content, from Tax Cheat Champion Charlie Rangel, to Mad Maxine Waters and Barney Frank to John Kerry’s Not So Swift Boat tax troubles.
Let’s just call this book a living document.

It was great fun to talk to Michelle again last night!

It was great to welcome back Charlie Baker, GOP nominee for governor, to WRKO and Pundit Review Radio last night. Charlie is such a good candidate, with the type of political/business background this state desperately needs. As the race goes on, the differences between the two legitimate candidates (Sorry Tim!) are getting more clear. I think Charlie will ultimately deliver Deval the electoral drubbing he so richly deserves.
Among the issues on the table last night, the Patrick administration’s decision to outsource our education standards to Washington DC bureaucrats, the future of local aid, taxes, casinos and reform.
