shitty hall

Herald: Boston City Hall named world’s ugliest building

It’s official now. Boston City Hall is the ugliest building . . . in the world!

Bostonians didn’t need VirtualTourist.com and City Hall’s top billing on the World’s Top 10 Ugliest Buildings and Monuments list to figure that out. Residents have known it pretty much since the hard-on-the-eyes pile of concrete and bricks went up…

City Hall was singled out for its dreary facade, cold interior, its big, empty, windswept plaza, as well as the way its monstrous, angular frame dominates its surroundings, said VirtualTourist.com general manager Giampiero Ambrosi.

The Web site, which claims 1 million members, placed the Hub horror ahead of such architectural atrocities as the Port Authority bus station in New York City, Montparnasse Tower in Paris and the LuckyShoe monument in Tuuri, Finland, a golden horseshoe overshadowing the Baltic country’s second-largest shopping mall.

wages

Mark Perry at Seeking Alpha wonders aloud,

Maybe the country would be better off in the long run if we let the Big Three fail, and in the process break the UAW labor monopoly, and then let Toyota, Honda (HMC) and Volkswagen (VLKAY.PK) take over the U.S. auto industry, and restore realistic, competitive, market wages to the industry. It might be the best long-run solution.

Professor Bainbridge says No Bailout, and offers his reasons why.

My feeling is that we have to do something for GM and Ford, too many jobs are at stake, but not without massive restructuring, ripping up existing union and management contracts, etc. Chrysler can go pound sand. They made their deal with the devil private equity, and bailing them out is just another bailout for Wall Street.

G. Calvin Mackenzie holds an endowed chair as The Goldfarb Family Distinguished Professor of Government at Colby College. He is among the county’s leading experts on the presidential transition process, literally writing the book on it, Leadership in Jeopardy: The Fraying of the Presidential Appointments System, Guidebook for the Senior Executive Service, and both editions of The Presidential Appointee’s Handbook. From 2000-2003, Professor Mackenzie was Senior Advisor to the Presidential Appointee Initiative in Washington while serving as Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution.

In additon to all that, Professor Mackenzie was my favorite professor from my days a mediocre student at Colby College in the late 1980s. Professor Mackenzie was an outstanding professor and it was great to reconnect with him and hear his insights into what goes on behind the scenes of the presidential transition.

Before the GOP figures out where they need to go, they need to take a long look at where they stand today.

The electorate is changing and the party needs to acknowledge that. They have become a regional, rural party dominated by older white voters. Some think the party needs to go right, become more conservative and focus on the core social and moral issues that have defined the party for the past quarter century.

I try to make the arguement that the party needs to open up, to accept those who agree with them 75% of the time. Politics is not a debating society where the purity of your positions is the deciding factor. What matters is developing the broadest possible coalition. What the GOP needs is new leadership and new ideas. They need to connect with younger and minority voters by demonstrating how their platform enables them to realize the American dream.

We got a lot of good calls, the mix was pretty even. This is going to be an interesting conversation for some time to come.

UPDATE: Don Luskin says this is the BEST OPENING LINE EVER IN A POLITICAL COMMENTARY, from PJ O’Rourke in the Weekly Standard,

Let us bend over and kiss our ass goodbye.

Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce is a veteran of the Vietnam war and spent 28 years in the U.S. Army. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match.

Tonight Bruce told us the emotional story of Desmond Doss, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary courage in World War II despite being a pacifist who refused to carry a weapon.
