It is such a great honor to be able to read fascinating books and then have the opportunity to interview the authors in great detail with the authors. This week, we welcomed Pulitzer Prize winnner Ron Suskind, author of Confidence Men: Wall Street, Washington and the education of a President.
This book gives an inside look at the first year of the Obama administration. Unprepared for office and unaware about the application of power, our young president has been run over by his far more seasoned staff. Who could have seen that coming? Certainly not the Beltway Intellegensia, who were in full swoon over Obama. Some of us saw this coming. Really, given his total lack of experience managing ANYTHING, how could it have turned out any different?
This book is the ideal companion to the Occupy movement as it explains in great detail the Wall Street crisis and the decisions made, and not made, by Obama. Let’s just say, when it came to changing Wall Street culture, he once again voted present. I’m convinced that if they passed this book out at the filthy Occupy sites, they would pack their tents and head for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match.
This week Bruce told us about Staff Sergeant Robert Gutierrez, Jr. Here is the citation to his Bronze Star Medal (With Valor),
Staff Sergeant Robert Gutierrez, Jr., distinguished himself by heroism as a Special Tactics Combat Controller, 21st Expeditionary Special Tactics Squadron, Combined Joint Special Operations Air Component while engaged in ground combat against an enemy of the United States in Afghanistan on 6 April 2008. On that day, Sergeant Gutierrez was attached to Army Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha 3312 as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller, in support of Operation COMMANDO WRATH. He provided critical Airmanship skills during a violent 6 and a half hour battle against heavily armed and entrenched enemy fighters. While approaching the objective, while climbing near-vertical terrain, the assault force was ambushed by anti-Coalition forces which pinned down the lead team on a 60-foot high rock cliff and produced several friendly casualties. Sergeant Gutierrez coordinated with the engaged element and directed lethal gun, missile, and bomb attacks from AH-64s and F-15Es. Despite these strikes, the attack intensified onto his team’s position. Despite being struck twice by 7.62 millimeter bullets in the helmet, Sergeant Gutierrez maintained his calm demeanor and continued to prosecute targets. As the fight continued, the insurgents shifted their efforts toward arriving helicopters and engaged them with heavy fire. Sergeant Gutierrez coordinated with the ground force commander to delay friendly force extraction until the enemy positions could be suppressed. Enabled his systematic control of air power during the fight, all 17 friendly casualties were safely evacuated and 40 enemy fighters were killed. By his heroic actions and unselfish dedication to duty, Sergeant Gutierrez has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

One of our favorite guests is Jim Pethokoukis, who recently left Reuters to join the American Enterprise Institute. A few weeks back, I was contacted by Jack Kelly, a former staffer for Mayor Menino, who blogs at Coffee with Caesar. He shared with me his post on the Occupy movement and asked if I would be interested in discussing. Since the post was so thoughtful, and hopeful about the Occupy movement, I said hell yea.
I enjoyed having Jack in the studio and having a civil, thoughtful discussion about Occupy specifically and politics in general. At the end of the day, politico’s need to be able to state their case, make their points and agree to disagree.

From his Silver Star citation,
Gunnery Sergeant Haney’s leadership, personal sacrifice, and calming influence enabled his platoon to repeatedly engage and defeat enemy forces in close combat. From 23 to 26 March 2003, Gunnery Sergeant Haney participated in firefights with Iraqi Military and Paramilitary Forces in An Nasariya, Iraq, during which his personal example while under fire set the tone for the platoon’s tactical success. During a direct fire engagement against a heavy machine gun, he dismounted his vehicle to gain awareness of the enemy’s positions, exposed himself to enemy fire, and provided higher headquarters with vital situational awareness. On 26 March 2003, while the Battalion’s Main Command Operations Center came under attack from two directions, Gunnery Sergeant Haney raced through intense fire to emplace Marines in defensive positions and orient their fires. After an explosion riddled Gunnery Sergeant Haney’s body with 60 pieces of shrapnel, he ignored his wounds and continued to transport injured Marines to the Battalion Aid Station. He refused medical attention until everyone else had been treated. By his bold leadership, wise judgment, and complete dedication to duty, Gunnery Sergeant Haney reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

This week Bruce told us about Retired Col. Charles P. Murray Jr., Medal of Honor recipient, who recently died at age 89,
He had joined the 3rd Infantry Division in France in 1944 after the Normandy invasion that June. Over the course of several brutal days in December, casualties thinned the ranks above him. He became the company commander.
On Dec. 16, he was leading a platoon of about 35 down a mountain path near the town of Kaysersberg, in northeastern France, when he eyed about 200 Germans attacking another battalion of U.S. troops. Rather than take his men into a position where they would be devastatingly outnumbered, he moved forward alone and radioed for an artillery attack. It missed, and before he could correct the coordinates, he lost the radio signal.
He then began launching grenades, revealing his own position and opening himself to a counterattack. Under heavy fire, he exhausted all the available grenades, according to a 2009 Army news release. He returned to his patrol, grabbed a rifle and returned to his position. He fired with such intensity — taking down 20 enemy soldiers and wounding numerous others — that the Germans began to withdraw, according to the Medal of Honor citation.
