Nancy’s right on schedule. Three significant missteps already. The unforced errors are piling up fast and the game hasn’t even started. She is Kerryesque in her ability to be her own worst enemy.

Certainly someone told her what an awful, potentially disastrous, selection Jack Murtha was for Majority Leader? Disgraced, impeached federal judge Alcee Hastings for Chair of the Intelligence Committee? Come on. Now this. The latest video is over at Hot Air; the key exchange,

THOMAS FERRARO, REUTERS: (INAUDIBLE) blame the surging violence in Iraq on al Qaeda deny the country is in the midst of a civil war?

NANCY PELOSI (D-CA), HOUSE SPEAKER-DESIGNATE: My response on the president’s representations are well known. But the 9/11 Commission dismissed that notion a long time ago and I feel sad that the president is resorting to it again.

Where to start? The 9/11 Commission Report was released on July 24, 2004. Al Qaeda in Iraq was a factor then (ever hear of Al Zarqawi?), they are an even bigger factor today. The 9/11 Commission didn’t even address the issue of Al Qaeda in Iraq.

This is the natural result of a secular humanist/multicuturalist society. This is where it leads boys and girls.

From today’s Townhall.com by Dennis Prager.

Keith Ellison, D-Minn., the first Muslim elected to the United States Congress, has announced that he will not take his oath of office on the Bible, but on the bible of Islam, the Koran.

He should not be allowed to do so — not because of any American hostility to the Koran, but because the act undermines American civilization.

First, it is an act of hubris that perfectly exemplifies multiculturalist activism — my culture trumps America’s culture. What Ellison and his Muslim and leftist supporters are saying is that it is of no consequence what America holds as its holiest book; all that matters is what any individual holds to be his holiest book.

Is the L.A. Times reporting unconfirmed enemy propaganda from an Iraqi stringer with ties to the insurgency? Or is the paper simply misreporting the facts, and failing to seek out and report the military’s side of the story?

We want to thank Patterico for joining us once again on Pundit Review Radio to discuss his LA Times-Ramadi investigation. We even got a surprise call from Tom Blumer of BizzyBlog whose tip got this investigation going.

This is citizen journalism at its best.

The interview is also available for download at iTunes.

The Democrats did the right thing, telling Nancy and the Gang NO when it comes to putting Jack Murtha in a leadership position. This is a great sign of sanity for the Democrats. If they can maintain an anti-Pelosi, centrist coalition, that is going to go a long way towards solidifying their position in the majority. I’m not saying that is a good thing, just that that is the only way the Democrats can do it. The country didn’t suddenly lurch to the left and adopt the far left positions of Nancy and the liberal democrats. They are looking for a change from the status quo of the Republican congress that forgot why they got the majority in the first place.

Now for the Republicans, what have they done to help themselves since the election? Select Mel Martinez as chairmen of the party over a guy like Michael Steele? What a bad, bad move. A missed opportunity of epic proportions.

Red State had the best line of all calling Martinez’s selection, The Harriet Miers of GOP Chairs. Ouch.

How about their picks for leadership in the Senate? Mitch McConnell and Trent Lott. Talk about tone deaf. Sure, McConnell is a solid conservative, and Lott knows how to operate in the Senate and get things done. But there is more to it than that. What about the media, the public face of the party? McConnell is old news at a time when the party needs a fresh face. Hugh Hewitt disagrees writing that McConnell will be a SUPERB minority leader. With all due respect, that is the ultimate in insider opinion. For people who aren’t rabid political junkies like us, McConnell means more of the same from the GOP, another tired old face.

Trent Lott? Please. Who could be worse in a leadership position? Lott was one of the most vocal opponents of the spending and earmark reform movement.

Who can forget his infamous quote about the reformist Porkbusters,

“I’ll just say this about the so-called porkbusters. I’m getting damn tired of hearing from them. They have been nothing but trouble ever since Katrina. We in Mississippi have not asked for more than we deserve. We’ve been very reasonable.”

Recent guest on Pundit Review Radio Dean Barnett, also blogging at Hugh Hewitt, sums it up well in a post Lott back on Top,

Trent Lott has won the number two job among Republicans in the Senate! Whoopee! If thereâ??s one message that the electorate sent the Republican Party last week, itâ??s that we hadnâ??t given them enough of Trent Lott. I cannot adequately express my delight that Senate Republicans have moved with such expediency to right this egregious wrong.

Mary Katherine Ham thinks both sides are crazy, here is a new Ham Nation video called The Dysfunctional Exes of American Politics

Both sides have their problems, but I think today’s House vote by the Dems is one giant leap forward for the Democrats and so far, more of the same from the GOP.

Jules Crittenden is the city editor for the Boston Herald and a columnist for the paper of military matters and foreign affairs. He is terrific. The blogosphere just got a little better with the recent launch of “Forward Movement”, Jules new blog.

The blogosphere is the perfect outlet for a guy like Jules, he’s brash, opinionated, smart and a hell of a writer. He shouldn’t be confined by the limits of the MSM with a once or twice a week column. Make this blog a regular part of your news diet.

Here is a post Jules did on the toughest call a reporter ever has to make,

Once upon a time, a dead American soldier from Massachusetts would have been front page news in my newspaper. I used to know all their names. I had spoken to relatives and friends of most of them. I had been to some of their homes, and to their funerals. Now I don’t even know the exact number.

Last night, we learned a young man with family ties to Worcester, Mass., was dead. Someone had to be assigned to make the call that no one wants to make.

This is what I advise reporters to say when they are intruding on someone’s grief:

Topic: Doing away with anonymous earmarks which enable legislators to pad bills with pork without having to be accountable for it.

Question: Why didn’t a GOP controlled Congress think of this?

Answer: They did. They talked about it endlessly. In the end, they did nothing.

Headline: Democrats: Identify pork sponsors

Irony
: The party of limited government has handed a core issue, fiscal responsibility, to the Democrats.

Agony
: The fact that a far left liberal like Nancy Pelosi is doing what the GOP Congress should have done years ago.

Bottom Line: A good idea is a good idea, even if it comes from Nancy Pelosi.

Democrats: Identify pork sponsors

WASHINGTON â?? Democrats aim to open the next Congress in January with a new rule that identifies lawmakers who use legislative “earmarks” to help special interests â?? a change Republicans promised but didn’t implement.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said her first agenda item after being elected House speaker will be a vote to require sponsors of earmarks to be identified. Currently, lawmakers can remain anonymous in sponsoring an earmark, which is language in a bill that directs funds or tax benefits to a business, project or institution.

“There has to be transparency,” the California congresswoman told USA TODAY last week. “I’d just as soon do away with all (earmarks), but that probably isn’t realistic.”

And yes, I know the Democrat leadership is up to their ears with earmarks themselves, but this is something that needs to be done, and should have been done a long time ago. I don’t really care who does it, just do it.

Just last night I was watching a show about the Medal of Honor and they told the story of President Truman, and what he would tell men he was presenting with this award,

I would rather have this award than be president of the United States.

That is how big an honor this is. When I woke this morning, the first news I heard was this,

WASHINGTON - President Bush said yesterday he will bestow the nation’s highest award for valor to a Marine from upstate New York who dove on a grenade to save his buddies in Iraq. The Medal of Honor will go posthumously to Cpl. Jason Dunham of Scio, N.Y., who would have been 25 years old yesterday - the 231st birthday of the Marine Corps.

As part of our weekly collaboration with Matthew Currier Burden of Blackfive to bring his series Someone You Should Know to the radio, we featured the amazing story of Jason Dunham back in May. To listen to what Jason did to receive our country’s highest honor, click here.
