Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us for another edition of Someone You Should Know, the untold, inspirations true stories of the men and women fighting for us around the world. The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Thanks to Matt, Bruce is now on board and we are thrilled to have him as part of the program.

Bruce has been honoring the recipients of the Silver Star in a series called Project Hero. Last night he told us the story of Lance Cpl. Carlos Gomez-Perez

Lance Cpl. Carlos Gomez-Perez received the award(Silver Star), the U.S. military’s third-highest medal of valor, during a ceremony at Camp Pendleton, where his unit is stationed.

The decoration recognizes Gomez-Perez’s “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity” during a battle in Fallujah on April 26, 2004, while he was serving as a fire-team leader for Company E, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

In the late morning, the platoon came under fire from machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades coming from three directions, according to a citation signed by Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter.

Gomez-Perez first made sure that several injured comrades received medical attention, then moved another downed Marine out of the line of fire, suffering wounds to his shoulder and face in the process.

“Despite his injuries, he again exposed himself to enemy fire and continued to attack the enemy with grenades and by firing his rifle with his uninjured arm,” the citation states. “By his bold leadership, wise judgment and complete dedication to duty, Lance Corporal Gomez-Perez reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.”

At the milblog conference in May, I remember talking to Michael Fumento about going to Walter Reed and he mentioned that he was researching a story on the Orthopedic Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Ward in Washington, D.C, and the surgical inpatient ward at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Here is his new Weekly Standard article,

Tough Americans: The Inspiring Stories of Soldiers Wounded in Iraq
By Michael Fumento

In the film “Home of the Brave,” a soldier who lost her hand in Iraq is asked if she underwent physical rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. “Yeah, Walter Reed,” she says. “Talk about tough Americans.” Tough Americans, indeed.

When I visited that same ward the first soldier I met was Sgt. Luke Shirley, who had stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) blowing off his right side appendages and spraying him with shrapnel. “It kinda sucks not having an arm or leg,” he told me, “but it hasn’t bothered me like you’d think it would.” Just offhand, I would think it would have devastated him. I was dumbstruck. What kind of person is this?

That’s why I visited Walter Reed’s Orthopedic Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Ward in Washington, D.C, along with the surgical inpatient ward at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. (At Bethesda the men and women aren’t yet ready to be sent on to Walter Reed or elsewhere for rehabilitation.) I wanted to meet these tough Americans and tell some of their stories.

Michael tells them here.

He talks at length about prosthetics in this article. When I had the honor of visiting Walter Reed I went to the prosthetics lab and shot some video. Turn down the sound on your computer before clicking on,

8 Questions Rudy Giuliani Needs to Answer
GrassTopsUSA Guest Commentary
By Gregg Jackson
07-18-07

1. Illegal Immigration: Mr. Guiliani, during a recent interview on Hannity & Colmes you failed to answer whether you supported construction of the 700-mile long border fence authorized under the Secure Fence Act of 2006. You said you supported a “technological” fence. What about an actual physical barrier? You also stated during the same interview that you thought “there has to be regularization for the people that are here (illegal aliens)…” Is it fair to assume then that as president you would support legislation similar to the Kennedy-McCain bill that would have provided amnesty to the 12-20 million illegal aliens in this country currently?

2. Gun Control: During an interview on the Charlie Rose Show on May 31, 1995 you implied that the NRA was an “extremist” organization in opposing some of the gun control laws you support such as the Brady Bill and so-called Assault Weapons Ban. Why should the 90 million gun owners and the 4 million members of the NRA support you for president given your consistent support of gun control laws including your support for written tests for all gun owners? Also, can you explain how stricter gun control laws reduce crime, since criminals don’t abide by the law anyway?

3. Roe v Wade: During a recent presidential debate you stated that it “would be okay” if Roe v. Wade were overturned. But you also stated that it would be ok if “a strict-constructionist judge” viewed Roe as a precedent. I’m confused. Which is it? As president, would it be your wish to see Roe overturned or not?

Ted Soresnson, the famed JFK speechwriter, is claiming that Barack Obama is the heir to the JFK legacy. Outside of being handsome, young and inexperienced, they have nothing in common.

JFK was FAR more conservative than Barack Obama is. Democrats never cease to amaze me with their lack of self-awareness of how far left they have moved since the days of JFK. They are unrecognizable. On tax issues, foreign policy and social issues. Obama is a lot closer to Ted K than JFK.

kennedy-obama-thinking

At some point the public, and maybe even the media, will move on from the Barack narrative about how “new” and “fresh” and “exciting” he is. They will, eventually, focus on what he is saying and what its implications are.

I consider myself a conservative person. Not a political conservative, but a conservative person. When I see stories like these two below about Barack Obama and the other Dems running for president, I can’t help but think that they have no idea how outside the mainstream of America this stuff is. They are throwing out 50% in the middle to appease 5% on the fringe.

Can you imagine JFK advcoting for tax hikes, retreat in the face of our enemies, sex ed for kindergarten and universal health care for abortions?

ABC News
Sex Ed for Kindergarteners ‘Right Thing to Do,’ Says Obama

ABC News’ Teddy Davis and Lindsey Ellerson Report: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told Planned Parenthood Tuesday that sex education for kindergarteners, as long as it is “age-appropriate,” is “the right thing to do.”

Gateway Pundit has more, including video. He also notes that,

ABC Political Radar has the whole exchange where he bashes conservatives in one sentence and then talks about “civil discourse in Washington” in the next breath.

Chicago Tribune
Democrats pledge support for wide access to abortion

WASHINGTON — Elizabeth Edwards said Tuesday that her husband’s health-care plan would provide insurance coverage of abortion.

Barack Obama gave a politics as usual answer that had to be later clarified and confirmed by his press people.

Asked about his proposal for expanded access to health insurance, Obama said it would cover “reproductive-health services.” Contacted afterward, an Obama spokesman said that included abortions.

And then there’s Obama’s voting record,

Senator Obama supported the interests of the Planned Parenthood 100 percent in 2006.

2005 Senator Obama supported the interests of the National Taxpayers Union 6 percent in 2005.

2005 Senator Obama supported the interests of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce 39 percent in 2005.

2005 Senator Obama supported the interests of the National Education Association 100 percent in 2005.

2005 Senator Obama supported the interests of the Gun Owners of America 0 percent in 2005.

Bill Clinton certainly wasn’t their heir to JFK, at least outside the bedroom, and neither is Barack Obama.

obama-clinton

You have to buy in fully to the MSM narrative and ignore an awful lot of, you know, evidence, to delude yourself into thinking that Barack Obama is the heir to the JFK legacy.

US Senate holds overnight Iraq debate

The US Senate is continuing a marathon overnight debate on the Iraq war, aiming for a showdown vote later in the day on a Democratic plan to withdraw combat troops by April 2008.

Ted Kennedy nemesis Howie Carr, in today’s Boston Herald

A sordid tale Teddy would like us to forget

Ted Kennedy pulled an all-nighter last night – how ironic is that? There must be something about Ted Kennedy and all-nighters on July 18, because it was 38 years ago tonight that he pulled another one.

At Chappaquiddick.

For a detailed examination of Teddy’s Profile in Cowardice, that led to the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, click here.

And how did Massachusetts voters pay Ted Kennedy back when he was up for re-election some 16 months later? With only 70% of the vote. That’ll show him!

Massachusetts can never live that down, neither can Ted Kennedy.
