I received an email from my good friend The Optimist this morning about the 40th anniversary of the 6 Days War. I asked him to do a guest post for us and he has submitted the following for your consideration.

History is a funny thing
By The Optimist

History is a funny thing. So many events in history can be debated as to their importance and lasting impact on the world today. I would argue that more than any other event since World War II, the 6 Days War between Israel and the Arab states has had more of an impact on our world today than any other event (and yes, that includes Paris Hilton’s first night in jail.)

40 years ago, Israel fundamentally changed the geopolitical world we live in. The Middle East today is a direct result of that war, and Israel’s hot-spots have most of their origins here. The ongoing battles over the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and the Golan Heights saw their start in this war (or at least focused the attention of the Arab world there and created the situation we see today.)

And it is an amazing story. In one day, Israel had gone from underdog to biggest kid on the block. In a pre-emptive attack, Israel attacked the Egyptian air force and in a single day nearly completely destroyed it. The armies of the Arab states were soundly defeated and never really recovered, though they tried again in 1973. Israel was now an occupying power. That fundamentally changed the way the Arab world viewed Israel.

From our point of view, the allegations that the US and Britain directly aided the Israeli’s quickly spread and have become accepted facts (for the record, I don’t have an opinion either way, but I find it very hard to accept that the US was directly involved when looking at the bombing of the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967.)

I am not passing judgment on either Israel or the Arab States for starting or finishing the war (a much deeper and lengthier discussion is warranted for that). The politics and tensions around that time I think made war inevitable between the two. But I do believe it is important to look back on the results of that war to get a better sense of the war happening now and how things can be fixed. There has to be an end sometime to all of this, and usually that can only come from understanding the beginning. Just a thought.

8 Questions Nobody Asks Mitt Romney
GrassTopsUSA Guest Commentary
By Gregg Jackson
06-01-07

Is it just me or are any of you as frustrated as I am at the ridiculously inane questions posed to the presidential candidates during the debates and interviews on TV and radio? It seems as though no politician has had to face any genuinely challenging questions regarding their actual positions and record.

Because I believe that most Americans are sick and tired of the scripted talking points, I will be issuing a series of “Questions For The Candidates”… questions that I have seldom, if ever, heard asked by any major TV or radio hosts… questions that should reveal the candidates’ true beliefs and values.

With any luck, perhaps some of these questions will find their way into future interviews and debates. At least then Americans would get what they deserve; straight talk and truth instead of talking points and spin.

Let’s start the ball rolling with Mitt Romney:

1. Homosexual-Marriage: Mr. Romney, you say that you oppose so-called same-sex marriage. If that is the case, why, when you were governor of Massachusetts and had the authority to remove activist judges who usurped the legislative authority of the citizens of the Commonwealth to make marriage laws, did you do nothing? Why, instead of stopping a group of unelected judges from imposing their personal views on the citizens of Massachusetts, did you instead order justices of the peace to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies or be fired? Why, did you direct the Department of Public Health to change the wording on marriage licenses from “husband” and “wife” to “partner A” and “partner B” when this was not required by any law?

I had the pleasure of attending a Support The Troops rally in Hyannis this past Memorial Day weekend. This was no ordinary event. It was organized by 14-year old Dylan DeSilva, founder of Cape Cod Cares for Our Troops. Dylan is an inspirational young man. He was recently honored as a Hero Among Us by the Boston Celtics. As you can see from this event, which was attended by more than 500 people and raised well in excess of $18,000, he is very deserving of the recognition. Congratulations Dylan on another great event, and thank you for everything you are doing to support the troops.

Back on April 1 Matt from Blackfive put out a call for spiritual warfare, asking for prayers for DJ Emery Jr. Since that time, we have provided periodic updates on DJ here and here.

Matt from Blackfive has a fantastic update on DJ Emery Jr. from his mom Connie,

Good morning everyone. DJ is doing pretty good. He is off all his IVs again and eating real food. Hopefully we are on the right track again. We are still not sure when his surgery is going to be on his arm. I have a special request from all our supporters out there. When you are praying for us if you could say a prayer for my sister (the Doran family). My nephew was killed in a car accident yesterday morning. You all helped DJ,Leslie and myself with prayers so I thought it would be nice for them also.I will be away for a few days to attend the funeral. I will update as much as I can. Talk to you all later. Keep up the good work everyone!

God bless Connie

Here is DJ and his month old daughter Carlee,

Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us for our discussion with Michael Yon live from Hit, Iraq. Hit is in Anbar province and we spent a lot of time covering the success in Anbar and the so-called “awakening”. Michael talked at length about the importance and benefits of working with tribal leaders. He mentioned “a very excellent article in Newsweek” on the subject, here it is.

Gathering the Tribes
U.S. field commanders are finally beginning to tap the traditional networks that helped Saddam to stay in power.

Michael told us,

“They’ve (tribal leaders) completely turned against Al Qaeda. They are simply not safe here in Anbar anymore.”

He also said that The Awakening was for the US military, a change of strategy that is paying dividends,

“The Awakening is also an awakening for us…We should engage the tribal leaders. There is true benefit to be reaching out to the sheiks and other spheres of influence.”

The bottom line from Michael,

“A new day is dawning and it looks like a real chance for some kind of success here in Iraq and I can tell you my spirits are substantially lifted just over the period of the last couple of months…I see 2007 is going to be a serious year for progress.”

Of course, he also warned that we need patience, time and good decision making to succeeded. I doubt we get any of the three from Washington.

Michael has been very negative on Iraq at times, including this grim assessment in January, so it was very encouraging to hear his report.

Michael is a truly independent citizen journalist and he needs our support to stay in Iraq and continue his great work.
