Is the job of ‘studio host’ so difficult that NBC absolutely must have Jim Lampley anchoring their billion dollar coverage? Couldn’t they have found someone less polarizing, like Keith Olberman?
Lampley was arrested for domestic violence last year in an ugly incident involving a girlfriend, his 14-year old son, drugs and alcohol. Furthermore, though far less serious, Lampley’s fringe political views are sure to alienate many viewers. NBC is allegedly in the business of attracting viewers, not repelling them. Here is the case against Jim Lampley, in chronological order,
Exhibit A: He’s a left wing kook
May 2005: Huffington Post blog entry: THE BIGGEST STORY OF OUR LIVES
NEVER have exit polls varied by beyond-error margins in a single state, not since 1948 when this kind of polling began. In this past election it happened in ten states, all of them swing states, all of them in Bush’s favor. Coincidence? Of course not.
Karl Rove isn’t capable of conceiving and executing such a grandiose crime? Wake up. They did it. The silence of traditional media on this subject is enough to establish their newfound bankruptcy. The revolution will have to start here. I challenge every other thinker at the Huffington Post: is there any greater imperative than to reverse this crime and reestablish democracy in America? Why the mass silence? Let’s go to work with the circumstantial evidence, begin to narrow from the outside in, and find some witnesses who will turn. That’s how they cracked Watergate. This is bigger, and I never dreamed I would say that in my baby boomer lifetime.
Exhibit B: Arrested for domestic violence last year. You would think the network that once employed O.J. Simpson would take this more seriously
January 2007: Jim Lampley Arrested for Domestic Abuse
Lampley was arrested and faced one felony count of domestic abuse / corporal injury, as well as two misdemeanor counts of violating a restraining order and preventing a witness from testifying.
A trifecta: Drugs, alcohol and children
Candice Sanders claims that on New Year’s Eve, Lampley and his son Aaron joined her for dinner. Sanders says she was engaged to Lampley, who she claimed lived with her in the apartment. Sanders alleges after dinner, at their apartment, Lampley “was drinking vodka and whiskey and became drunk.” She adds in the document that “he was also high on pot.”
Sanders, Miss California USA 2003, says in the complaint that the trouble began when she wanted to finish watching a movie. Lampley then “pulled me from the sofa I was on” and “began to yell at me and chased me around the apartment.”
Sanders says at that point all hell broke loose. She alleges, “He grabbed me and threw me against a wall. He then threw me against another wall. He then threw me against the door and I collapsed.”
Sanders goes on to say that 14-year-old Aaron saw her on the floor and she asked him to call the police. She writes in the document,” Jim beat Aaron to the phone and kept Aaron from getting [to the phone]. She says Lampley then drove away with Aaron. Sanders claims she suffered head, neck and back injuries.
Lampley claimed innocence,
“I am innocent of the charge of domestic abuse that has been leveled against me and will vigorously defend myself,†Lampley said. “I thank my friends and family for their support during this difficult time and ask for understanding and patience from the media until my legal situation allows me to discuss this in more depth.â€
Then broke the law again in February 2007: Jim Lampley Charged With Violating Order
Sports announcer Jim Lampley was charged Friday with violating a temporary restraining order filed by a former beauty queen. The 57-year-old Lampley faces up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted of the misdemeanor charge, the district attorney’s office said.
Despite his claims of innocence, Lampley pled ‘no contest’, which as this article states, “has the same effect as a guilty plea”
February 2007: Jim Lampley pleads no contest, gets probation
Sports announcer Jim Lampley pleaded no contest Wednesday morning to a misdemeanor charge that he violated a restraining order to keep away from his former girlfriend after he allegedly attacked her in their Encinitas home on New Year’s Eve.
Lampley, 57, was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program, which Lampley can complete through one-on-one sessions, according to court documents and Deputy District Attorney Per Hellstrom, who prosecuted the case.
In criminal court, a plea of no contest has the same effect as a guilty plea.
I’m not saying that Lampley should never work again, or that he should be fired by NBC. Clearly, people make mistakes and people are entitled to their opinions. I’m simply asking, is this the best guy NBC can come up with to anchor their billion dollar coverage of the Olympics? Obviously, they have concluded “yes”. I think they are wrong.
Sure seems like it. Here he is a while back, praising the mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick. At :37, Obama says this about Kwame,
We know that he is going to be doing astounding things for many years to come…
Did Barack nail this one or what?
Detroit mayor faces arraignment on assault charges
DETROIT – An arraignment has been set for Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on assault charges after police say he confronted detectives trying to deliver a subpoena to the mayor’s friend.
Kilpatrick’s arraignment has been scheduled for Friday afternoon in Detroit’s 36th District Court. The hearing was scheduled shortly after Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox announced he’s filing two counts of assaulting or obstructing a police officer in the furtherance of their duties.
Each felony count brings up to 2 years in prison or a fine of $2,000.
The mayor already faces perjury, official misconduct and obstruction of justice charges stemming from his testimony in a civil trial last year.
In case you were wondering, no, the AP story never did identify him being a Democrat.

If you thought it was pretty hypocritical of Al Gore to talk about the need for energy conservation while he travels the world, via private jet, how about Bill Clinton speaking out on the importance of monogamy!
Clinton’s advice to beat Aids: stay faithful
Bill Clinton made a plea yesterday for a new emphasis on monogamy as a key element in the battle against Aids.
“To pretend we can ever get hold of this without dealing with that – the idea of unprotected sexual relations with unlimited numbers of partners – I think would be naïve,” he said.
I know, this is too easy. Bill Clinton, champion of monogamy. Beautiful.
What, was John Edwards not available?
What’s next? Manny Ramirez speaking out on the value of a hard days work for honest day’s pay? Brett Favre on the importance of being decisive? Paris Hilton talking about energy solutions, er, scratch that.

15 Questions Rick Warren Should Ask Obama and McCain
Gregg Jackson
Thursday, August 07, 2008Pastor Rick Warren, author of the “Purpose Driven Life,†will be hosting a “Compassion Forum†August 16th at Saddleback Church in California in which he will be asking questions to both presidential candidates Senators Obama and McCain. According to a recent NY Times article, Mr. Warren was quoted as saying:
“Since I’m their friend, I’m not going to give them any gotcha questions,†Mr. Warren said, adding that a typical query would be, “What’s the most difficult decision you’ve had to make, and how did you make it?â€
Setting aside for the moment the fact that we as Christians have a solemn obligation to speak prophetically to the world about Christ and His Word even if what we say makes our “friends†uncomfortable, as a Christian, interested in knowing specifically where the candidates stand on issues in relation to their Christian faith, not only do I want to know what the most difficult decisions they’ve had to make are, but how their personal relationship with Jesus Christ and His Word actually informed and influenced those decisions.
The “Compassion Forum†will focus on global poverty, HIV, and the environment, which are all issues that should be of concern to all Christians. But I hope that Mr. Warren will also pose questions regarding the great social and cultural issues of our time including abortion, embryonic stem cell research, same-sex “marriage,†and the mainstreaming of homosexuality. People can watch turn on any of the mainstream networks for non-threatening softball questions for the candidates. Mr. Warren should use his forum as an opportunity to ask the difficult and challenging questions not often heard in a presidential campaign. This may be his last opportunity before it becomes a “hate crime†to do so.
Here are some questions I suggest Mr. Warren asks candidates Obama and McCain:
1. For both candidates: What is truth? Who is truth? And Is that truth transcendent and applicable at all times to everyone regardless of their impulses, behavioral preferences, desires, wants, nationality, ethnicity, religious dogma, gender, race, etc?
2. Sen. Obama, you have said you are personally pro-life but in favor of abortion rights up to and even including after delivery in some cases. Why are you pro-life personally if an abortion doesn’t actually kill a baby in her mother’s womb? Also, do you think Jesus would be in favor of abortion? Why or why not?
3. Sen. McCain, you claim to be personally pro-life as well. Why? And if you believe that abortion always ends the life of the developing baby in her mother’s womb, why would it be ok for individual states to legalize killing babies? Don’t our nation’s founding documents the Declaration of Independence (“life, liberty, pursuit of happiness”) and Constitution (5th and 14th Amendments) guarantee the right to life that no individual state can violate?
Bruce McQuain told us an amazing story of bravery tonight, that was spun as a defeat by the MSM, but was anything but. Bruce contrasts AP coverage of a recent attack on US troops in Afghanistan with the reporting of Steve Mraz of Stars & Stripes and Independent milblogger Jeff Emanuel, who sums it up this way,
Perhaps the most important takeaway from that encounter, though, is the one that the mainstream media couldn’t be bothered to pay attention long enough to learn: that, not for the first time, a contingent of American soldiers that was outnumbered by up to a twenty-to-one ratio soundly and completely repulsed a complex, pre-planned assault by those dedicated enough to their cause to kill themselves in its pursuit.
That kind of heroism and against-all-odds success is and has been a hallmark of America’s fighting men and women, and it is one that is worthy of all attention we can possibly give it.â€
This is truly an amazing, inspirational and moving story about men with a level of bravery and courage that I will never be able to fully comprehend. You don’t want to miss this one.
A special thanks to Mary Ann of Soldiers Angels Germany for making us aware of this story.

Recently, Bruce McQuain profiled Marine Sgt. Merlin German as part of our Someone You Should Know series. Last night we welcomed Brian Guerra, director of Merlin’s Miracles, the charity that carries his legacy forward.
Known by those who treated him as “Miracle Manâ€, Merlin German had a vision to help burned children and their families. He wanted the foundation to be named “Merlin’s Miraclesâ€. Sgt. German understood how critical the support he’d received from charities like the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund and Soldier’s Angels had been to his recovery, and he wanted to provide the same type of support for children who were burn victims.
