It was a real pleasure to speak with former Congressman George R. Nethercutt, Jr. He holds a unique place in American history, even if I repeatedly screwed it up on Sunday night! I said Mr. Nethercutt was the first and only man to unseat a sitting Speaker of the House. He was in fact the first person to do that since 1860. Mr. Nethercutt was a member of the Republican Revolution Class of 1994, unseating Speaker Tom Foley in the process. I thought this would be a great week to check in with Mr. Nethercutt to get his perspective on the Freshman Class of 2010, aka “Tea Party Terrorists”. He shared some fascinating insight about the 1994 class, especially when he talked about how they lost their way as cutters and reformers. According to Mr. Nethercutt, the House leadership wanted a generational change in Congress and they felt te way to do that was to bring home goodies, aka pork, to their districts. The lure of Washington DC culture was too much and over time, they became part of the problem and not the solution.
We also talked about his book, In Tune With America. Here is a portion of an op-ed in USA Today that Mr. Nethercutt authored with former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Celebrate America by learning about her
One study showed that only about 35% of Americans can name all three branches of the federal government, let alone state what they do. More evidence may be found simply by watching the “Jaywalking” segment of The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, which reveals glaring examples of the lack of basic civic literacy of those interviewed.
Today, cultural movements within the United States continue to undermine our reverence for the founding documents, taking a swipe at all that has come before our modern culture. A June 9 news report chronicled the story of one Virginia publishing company putting warning labels on such iconic documents as the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Federalist Papers, foolishly asserting that they do not represent “modern thought” or adequately take into account social issues on which the United States has evolved since our country’s beginnings. It’s time America got back to basics.

Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match.
This week Bruce told us about Silver Star recipient, US Army Sergeant First Class Stephan Johns,
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Stephan Johns, Sergeant First Class, U.S. Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Special Forces Sniper on a Special Operations Team, during combat operations in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, on 30 May 2004, in Afghanistan. On that date, Sergeant First Class Johns was in the last helicopter of a group mounting an assault on Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters in a valley in northeast Afghanistan. His job was to shoot at the enemy from the air to provide cover to ground forces. When his helicopter was hit and briefly forced down, Sergeant First Class Johns jumped out to set up a one-man defensive wall between a group of enemy fighters and the main American assault group. Alone on the ground for 30 minutes before being picked up by another helicopter, he killed nine enemy fighters who repeatedly rushed him.
The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Bruce does an incredible job with the series every week. Well, this was fun. I met for the first time last night Samantha Clemens, host of the eponymously named show on Boston’s Progressive Talker AM 1510. Samantha has been on WRKO quite a bit lately. Last night was our opportunity to welcome her in and talk politics. We discussed downgrades, debt, deficits, new tone and even fusion energy. It was a fun, fast hour of talk. Look forward to doing it again soon.

The John Kerry Truth Commission has reported for duty and issued its first major ruling today.
No longer will talk of man-made global warming be allowed on the airwaves, radio or interwebs.
In a rambling 75 minute press conference, in which no other members of the Commission spoke, Truth Czar Kerry said,
“It has become perfectly clear to me, to my Truth Commission, Mr. Jarvis, Mr. Maher, Mr. Olbermann and to Ms. Walters and Ms. Stahl, that the time has come to say enough. It is our job to decide what is fair and balanced, what is educational and in the best interests of the American people. The evidence has become overwhelming. It’s time for the American people to face facts, until the Kerry Truth Commission came along, they were being misled in a deliberate campaign of lies and distortions that wrecked our economy and eroded our liberties. The scam is over and the Kerry Truth Commission is here to restore science to its rightful place.
Thanks to me, er, us, The John Kerry Truth Commission, this dark green chapter in American history is behind us.
Here are but a few of the hundreds of examples from the JFKTC report,
August 2011: Blockbuster: Planetary temperature controls CO2 levels — not humans
The higher levels of CO2 in recent decades appear to be mostly due to natural sources. He presented this research at the IUGG conference in Melbourne recently, causing great discussion and shocking a few people. Word reached the Sydney Institute, which rushed to arrange for him to speak, given the importance of this work in the current Australian political climate.
August 2011: Polar Bear Population Higher than in 20th Century
“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that the polar bear population is currently at 20,000 to 25,000 bears, up from as low as 5,000-10,000 bears in the 1950s and 1960s.
August 2011: Arctic ‘tipping point’ may not be reached
Scientists say current concerns over a tipping point in the disappearance of Arctic sea ice may be misplaced.
Danish researchers analysed ancient pieces of driftwood in north Greenland which they say is an accurate way to measure the extent of ancient ice loss. Writing in the journal Science, the team found evidence that ice levels were about 50% lower 5,000 years ago. They say changes to wind systems can slow down the rate of melting. They argue, therefore, that a tipping point under current scenarios is unlikely.
July 2011: New NASA Data Blow Gaping Hole In Global Warming Alarmism
NASA satellite data from the years 2000 through 2011 show the Earth’s atmosphere is allowing far more heat to be released into space than alarmist computer models have predicted, reports a new study in the peer-reviewed science journal Remote Sensing. The study indicates far less future global warming will occur than United Nations computer models have predicted, and supports prior studies indicating increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide trap far less heat than alarmists have claimed.
January 17, 2010: World misled over Himalayan glacier meltdown
A WARNING that climate change will melt most of the Himalayan glaciers by 2035 is likely to be retracted after a series of scientific blunders by the United Nations body that issued it.
Two years ago the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a benchmark report that was claimed to incorporate the latest and most detailed research into the impact of global warming. A central claim was the world’s glaciers were melting so fast that those in the Himalayas could vanish by 2035. In the past few days the scientists behind the warning have admitted that it was based on a news story in the New Scientist, a popular science journal, published eight years before the IPCC’s 2007 report.
This was a real honor to welcome Curtis Patrick to Pundit Review Radio. Curtis worked for Barry Goldwater in 1964 and joined Ronald Reagan’s campaign for governor in 1965. He spent the next 40 years working in various roles for governor and president Reagan. We’re likely to never have a guest who knew the man better than Curtis Patrick. I loved that Reagan: What Was He Really Like? covers early Reagan and it does so not by talking to the upper echelon of his staff but the people who actually made things work on a day-to-day basis. These are the recollections of people inspired by Reagan and who worked long hours for little money or recognition. This is their story.

The original premise of Pundit Review Radio was to bring the best of the blogs to the radio. A local blog I have been reading and enjoying for its smart take on the issues is called Critical Mass, written by “Dan”. I contacted Dan and told him I enjoyed his blog and wanted to have him on the show. Turns out Dan is something of an insider in the state Republican Party. It was Dan Haley, former Treasurer in the Charlie Baker for Governor campaign as well as former chief of Staff to Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey.
He joined me in-studio to talk Massachusetts politics, especially Sen. Brown and the Democrats ridiculous attacks against him. What a great guy! Hope to have him back on soon.

The original premise of Pundit Review Radio waaaaaay back in 2004 was to bring the best of the blogs to the radio. When I heard that Allen McDuffee had launched Think Tank Blogged in 2010, I was hooked. What a great idea! There are 1500 Think Tanks in Washington DC with an amazing amount of influence and nobody was covering them in a comprehensive, regular way. It was great to talk to him just as he launched the site.
Just HOW good of an idea? Within a year, Allen and his blog were scooped up by the Washington Post! Amazing accomplishment to go from start up to acquisition by the beltway media Goliath within a year. Wow.
Allen had just returned from the first Google Ideas summit on, of all things, violent extremism. Being a Google initiative, they have humble aspirations,
The conference was also a defining moment for Google Ideas. The conference, which was the think tank’s first endeavor, is helping the organization refine its mission and structure.
“We didn’t come into this with a perfectly defined organizational structure and defined roles for each position,†said Cohen. And it’s not something that is likely to change at Google Ideas.
“We just might be the ones to break the mold on the way think tanks think of themselves,†he said.
